“They didn’t just show me, okay, we have these many views in our ads. They were very clear about, okay, this is how much money is going back to your business.”

02 · The problem

The owner was doing the marketing himself.

Short version: the owner was running the marketing on top of the restaurant, and nobody could say what it was bringing back.

Before Mariscos Choix had a marketing director, the marketing sat with Raul, the owner, on top of everything else that comes with running a restaurant. Marketing was happening. Nobody could say for sure what it was doing.

“The owner was taking care of everything from marketing operations, and so he wasn’t really sure of what the situation was,” Jose says. “What I realized in the beginning was that there were a lot of things that needed some fine tuning.”

Raul signed with Dineline, then hired Jose Jimenez to bring marketing in house. Jose arrived to find an agency already on the books and no stake in defending it. “It was sort of my responsibility to check what we were assigned to and evaluate if it was worth it.”

He had sat through the other kind of report before. “You get fed a lot of superficial metrics. They don’t actually mean much for the actual business.”

So the test had two parts. Show the restaurant money coming in, and be straight about it when a campaign is not working.

What he wanted to see

“How much are we selling? How many tickets? How much money? How many visits?”

03 · The solution

Dineline runs the ads. The restaurant sees the dollars back.

Short version: Dineline runs paid Google campaigns and reports what comes back in dollars, including when a campaign misses.

The work itself is on Google: paid campaigns built for the restaurant’s own market. Jose credits them with putting Mariscos Choix in front of more people and bringing new guests through the door.

What changed the relationship was the report that came with the campaigns. It does not stop at views and clicks. It puts a dollar figure on what came back to the restaurant, in a form a busy owner can read in a minute.

That is the version Raul sees. Jose reads the detail, asks the questions, and pushes back when something looks off. Raul gets the one number he cares about.

“The owner is really busy. He wants to know the important aspects, how much money is coming in. You need to be able to translate it to how much impact is it actually making.”

The part Jose did not expect was what happens when a campaign misses. He gets a straight answer about what fell short and a new idea to try, and he gets both quickly. He checks the campaigns himself, suggests changes, and the team runs with them.

For someone hired to question the expense, that turned out to matter more than any single month’s number.

“In times where it’s not exactly working or it’s not exactly what we were hoping for. That to me is even more important.”

The verdict

Worth the investment.

“I’d say it’s definitely worth the investment. I think it’s been just successful, whichever way I look at it. Like I said, whenever something’s not working, very quick response, very creative solutions. Just a good experience all around.”
